Strong like Popeye!

In Chinese medicine we refer to Liver Blood when we talk about the capacity of the blood to nourish muscles, organs and the brain.   A good capillary system delivers Liver Blood to  muscles and keeps them supple and healthy like Popeye’s  (if you’re young you can look it up!).   Tendons and ligaments often show early signs of Liver Blood deficiency as is seen in conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.   Floaters in the eyes are a sign of the Liver Blood not nourishing the brain and eyes adequately.    In addition, having enough Liver Blood is essential for good and restful sleep.

These are some of the foods traditionally used to help build Liver Blood.

Supplements such as folic acid, iron, pollen, royal jelly, Vitamins A, B Complex, E and zinc.

Fruits such as avocado, figs, dates, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, raisins, and cherries.

Vegetables like beets, kale, sweet potato, shiitake mushrooms, chard, spinach (Popeye that sounds like a great dinner!).

Basmati rice and oats are excellent grains to eat.

Organic meats are very important for anyone suffering from severe Liver Blood deficiency.   Lamb, beef and bison in particular.

And lots of beans!   Black beans, aduki beans, navy, lima, pinto, kidney — the musical fruit!

Black and white sesame seeds, flax seeds, peanuts, walnuts — these are very helpful.

For fish try oysters, mussels, salmon, tuna, carp.

Dairy food can be very beneficial if you can digest it properly.

Chlorophyll and goji berries are helpful, as are coconut oil and milk, and nettle tea.

There are many delicious ways to build your Liver Blood.  Enjoy!
